The Power of the Light

The Power of the Light

The other day we were seeing a patient who was claustrophobic in our surgery room; the room can seem very dark since we never open the blinds, due to privacy issues. But on this particular day the patient insisted on having the blinds opened, so the other assistant opened them. I remember in the middle of the surgery walking by and seeing all the light shining in this room, it overwhelmed me with so much joy I could feel myself smiling as I looked into the room. When the surgery was over I spoke to the other assistant and she explained to me that the light that shined in gave her strength to stay focused, it gave her overwhelming joy and that she could not contain it, she had to share with the doctor and she felt like we should always allow the light to shine in.

This moment reminded me of what Jesus does for us and what scripture tells us. When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but you will have the light of life.” (John 8:12) He shines light in the darkest places of our hearts and when the light shines through the dark it gives us an overwhelming feeling of joy that we can’t seem to contain, this overwhelming feeling leads us to share it with others and that is exactly what God wants us to do, he wants us to shine our light of Jesus into this dark world. “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16)

There are so many people who are feeling the weight of their sin, who are living in darkness and if someone would just tell them, or remind them  that they don’t have to dwell and live in darkness, that there is a light who shines brighter than all the lights together, they would be set free! You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light. (2 Samuel 22:29)

As I dig deeper into the Word as 2 Samuel 22:29 says the Lord is turning darkness into light for me. I have begun to experience so much joy, I cannot contain it and I feel the need to share it with everyone. When we set our eyes on Jesus and continue to remind ourselves what the Word of God tells us, then we are able to focus on Jesus and not on the things of this would. He gives us strength to do what God’s will commands us to do, if we continue to have faith, remember what the TRUTH is, and denounce the lies Satan tries to feed us. We have to put on the Armor of God. So, even when we feel we are in the midst of a storm or a dark season, if we will just focus our eyes on the light that is shining through we will be able to see the love that God has for us. We can also be reminded that He is with us, His love will never leave us, nor forsake us. And if He brings us to a storm He will bring us through it.
